The project is interdisciplinary by the very nature of the environment, which includes chemical, geological, pedological, hydrological and biological compartments. These compartments by interaction give rise to biogeochemical and ecological processes. The fluxes of toxic elements go from one compartment to another and are transported by the mobile ones like surface water and groundwater, or mobile organisms. Understanding the mobility, circulation and distribution in space and time of toxic elements is not possible without an interdisciplinary approach. Interdisciplinarity is not an option in solving efficiently and effectively real environmental problems, it is a must.

The project is also transdisciplinary because it involves and important dimension of stakeholders identification and organization. Actually the market of these cooperating stakeholders in mining areas is our target. In ecological parlance our goal is to produce innovative services and technologies for the management of contaminated socio-ecological systems having mines in their structure, and this is a truly transdisciplinary problem. However, we do not tackle the political and societal aspect, only produce tools which can be useful for public and private decision makers for solving their common problems. There will be a strong demand for such tools as a result of the pressures resulting from the implementation of water framework directive, future soil directive, biodiversity legislation and legislation controlling the quality of crops.
